Tennis betting: two players, many small decisions
Tennis is an individual sport with no draws, built from sets, games and points. That structure supports a wide range of markets, from the match winner down to the number of games. Match winner
The simplest two-way market. A player ranked far higher is often priced very short, so a win pays little while an unexpected defeat costs the full stake. That is why many bettors turn to set or game markets instead.
Set betting and set handicaps
Betting on the exact set score (2–0 or 2–1, for example) pays more but needs a sharper prediction. A set handicap works like a football handicap: the favourite may need to win by two sets. One important difference: men's Grand Slam matches are best of five sets, most other events best of three — which changes every market fundamentally.
Game handicaps and total games
A game handicap applies to the difference in games won; total games (over/under) to how many games the match lasts. Two big servers produce tie-breaks and tight sets that push totals up; a one-sided match ends quickly.
The surface
Surface matters. On clay the ball is slower, rallies are longer and a big serve counts for less; on grass and fast hard courts servers dominate. The same player can produce very different results on different surfaces.
The retirement rule
Players retire through injury fairly often in tennis. What happens to your bet then — void, or settled in favour of the player who advances — is defined in each bookmaker's rules and varies between them. Always read that rule before betting on tennis.
In-play tennis
A break point or a lost set moves the odds abruptly. Live tennis is among the fastest markets, so a fixed budget and a cap on the number of bets matter even more.
