Basketball betting: lots of points, fewer surprises — or not?
Basketball is fast and high-scoring, so its betting markets look different from football's. There is effectively no draw (a tie at full time goes to overtime), while the points margin and the total are at the centre of nearly every game. This guide explains how those markets work. Moneyline
The simplest market: which team wins, overtime included. With no draw it is two-way, so the margin is easy to calculate: 1 / odds1 + 1 / odds2 — anything above 100% is the bookmaker's share. Heavy favourites can be priced very short, which is why many bettors turn to the spread instead.
Point spread
The bookmaker sets a points line, say –6.5 for the favourite. If the favourite wins by 7 or more, the bet wins; by less, or if it loses, the bet loses. The half point prevents a push (stake returned). Spreads balance the two sides, so both usually carry similar odds.
Totals (over/under)
You bet whether both teams together score more or fewer points than a line. Pace is the key: fast, high-volume shooting teams, tired defences, games on consecutive nights. Note that overtime points usually count — a close finish can turn an "under" game into an "over" in a few possessions.
Quarter and half markets
Basketball splits naturally into periods, and many bookmakers price the first quarter or first half separately. Shorter periods give chance a bigger role, and rotations mean the first quarter often plays differently from the game as a whole.
What to watch
- Injuries and rest days: a missing star moves the line sharply.
- Back-to-back games: fatigue from consecutive nights.
- Regular season vs play-offs: pace and defence change in the play-offs.
